À travers le médium photographique, j'explore la nature intuitive des dialogues intrapersonnels. Ma pratique se base sur des concepts autour de la rumination, des notions d'intimité et de l’examination de réalités subjectives.
Mon processus créatif est alimenté par le besoin de collectionner, de comprendre et de communiquer des réalités subjectives. Mon travail représente des environnements naturels extérieurs afin d'examiner des environnements psychologiques intérieurs. En captant et en combinant des bribes de lieux naturels à travers divers lentilles photographiques, je crée des liens entre réalités subjectives.
Avec des procédés photographiques argentiques, numériques, et alternatifs - parfois accompagnés de vidéos, de textes ou de trames sonores - mes photographies agissent comme des filtres: elles parlent avec frontières; elles purifient des idées contaminées; elles me permettent d'exprimer et de rendre tangible des contextes ambigus et des moments éphémères. L'inclusion de vidéos, de textes ou de paysages sonores supplémentent les images. Des objets peuvent aussi s’intégrer à mon œuvre. Ces composantes non-photographiques servent à mieux communiquer les subtilités de mes recherches.
Souvent hors d'encadrements traditionnels, mes photographies s’apposent directement au mur ou sont montées via une variété d’attaches et d’adhésifs pour combiner les composantes d’une œuvre. Je joue avec la matérialité du médium pour offrir - au delà d’une simple documentation photographique - la possibilité aux spectateur•ices de vivre l'œuvre tout en examinant leur subjectivité intérieure et en explorant leurs réalités individuelles.

Whereas one cannot NOT communicate: we are left to tirelessly interpret ourselves and each other within our perceived realities.
Through the photographic medium, I explore the intuitive nature of intrapersonal dialogues. My practice bases itself in themes of rumination, abstract notions of intimacy, and extensive examinations of subjective realities.
My creative process is fuelled by a need to collect, understand and communicate subjective realities. My work often represents natural spaces in order to dissect and investigate psychological environments. By capturing and combining natural environments through various photographic lenses, I reveal inherently hidden internal dialogues to create relationships between realities.
Through film, digital, and alternative photographic processes - sometimes accompanied by video, text or sound - my photographs act as filters: they speak with boundaries; they purify contaminated ideas; they allow me to voice and make tangible specific instances of ambiguous contexts and ephemeral moments. The inclusion of video, texts and soundscapes serve to emphasize the images. Small objects can also be incorporated into my work. These non-photographic components act as supporting roles to better communicate the intricacies of my research.
Often presented outside traditional framing methods, my photographs can be affixed directly to the walls or mounted with various fasteners and adhesives to combine the components of each piece. By taking the photographic medium further than simple representation, I offer the opportunity for the viewer to consider the work beyond its visible components. Through my work, they are invited to examine their inner subjectivity and explore interpretations of their own realities.
Catherine Arseneault est artiste et travailleuse culturelle qui habite et travaille sur le territoire non cédé du Mi’kma’ki dans le district Siknikt (Moncton, Nouveau-Brunswick, Canada). Elle est titulaire d'un BAV de l'Université de Moncton.
Elle travaille principalement avec des techniques photographiques analogiques et alternatives. Son processus explore la communication intrapersonnelle et le dialogue interne. Ses œuvres ont été présentées dans plusieurs expositions et elle à participé à quelques résidences de création à l’internationales. En tant que travailleuse culturelle, Catherine s'engage dans plusieurs initiatives de sa communauté. Elle siège au conseil d’administration de l’Association des centres d’artistes autogérés en Atlantique (Atlantis) depuis 2018. Elle travaille actuellement à fonder une chambre noire communautaire: F Stop Studio - un nouveau centre d’artiste autogéré en construction à Moncton.

Catherine Arseneault is an artist and cultural worker living and working on the traditional unceded territory of the Wəlastəkwiyik and Mi’kmaq Peoples in the Siknikt District (Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada). She holds a BFA from Université de Moncton.
As a lens-based artist, she mainly works in silver print and alternative photographic techniques. Her creative process explores the intuitive nature of intrapersonal communication and internal dialogues. Her work has been shown in several group and solo exhibitions and she has taken part in creative residencies internationally. She is consistently involved in local cultural initiatives and has sat on the executive of the Association of Artist Run Centres of the Atlantic since 2018. Currently, Catherine is leading in the foundation of F Stop Studio Inc. — a new artist-run community darkroom under construction in Moncton.
